Looking into the history of embroidery machine -- hand embroidery machine

May 05, 2022

A hand embroidery machine is a machine that can imitate the appearance of manual sewing. It was invented by Herman josu é Heilmann (1796-1848) in MILUS, France in 1828. In 1835, the technical drawings of his machine were published. In the following decades, companies in France, Germany, Switzerland, and other countries developed various variants of the machine.

The operation method of the machine is: the printer sitting on the left guides the scaler with his left hand to track each needle (the scaler guides the moving position of the embroidery frame), and rotates the wheel with his right hand to push the needle into the fabric. Then, the printer presses the pedal with his foot and opens and closes the clip holding the needle. At that time, there was no electricity and all mechanical operation was laborious. The stitch is fixed by the flying shuttle at the back, and the bottom line is in the flying shuttle. the machine is also the original form of the shuttle machine.

Scaler

The scaler used is a large picture on the printer's digital board, which is 6 times larger than the actual embroidery. In the past, there was a drawing step in the printing process, which usually magnified the pattern six times. Then paste the drawn pattern onto the zero-size digital board.

Each color in the design is sewn separately (for example, all the blue parts have been processed, and then the machine thread again with the new color) until the design is completed. This machine comes in various sizes and is used in different use scenarios in homes and factories.

Using the manual embroidery machine, hundreds of images can be made on one piece of paper at a time. It should be noted that these early machines could use silk thread, while shuttle embroidery machines needed spinning/twisting.

Embroidery machine

This machine was used to make a kind of postcard that was very popular in the first half of the 20th century, namely silk embroidered postcard. Especially during the first World War (1914-1918).
