Sewing Machine Repair: Troubleshooting Thread Breakage

1. The needle thread breaks with a cut end.

Analysis: The needle may be inserted incorrectly or not fully installed, causing it to be too low. The fabric is sewn might be too stiff, the needle may be too fine, or the presser foot pressure is too high.

Solution: Check the installation of the needle and the needle bar connecting the shaft screw for looseness. Replace the needle or adjust the presser foot pressure.

2. Thread curls and forms short tufts at both ends of the break.

Analysis: The thread tension is too tight or there is tangling during sewing. The thread may get jammed into the shuttle bed guide slot. The thread is brittle, of poor quality, or has burrs at the passing points.

Solution: Adjust the tension of the thread take-up lever and check the thread path to eliminate tangling. Examine the shuttle for signs of wear and replace if necessary. Smooth the passing points and replace the thread.

3. Heavy thread accumulation at the lower part of the fabric, causes the needle to break and the breakage ends to form a fish-tail shape.

Analysis: The feed dog is too low, causing excessive thread buildup and breakage. The synchronization between feeding and sewing is disrupted, leading to thread breakage. The loose presser foot and needle hinder the fabric's movement.

Solution: Raise the feed dog, adjust the position angle of the feed dog cam, and tighten the presser foot and needle screws.

The sewing machine's thread breakage exhibits wavy fluctuations.

Analysis: The face thread was not properly inserted into the shuttle bed. The shuttle race may be loose or suddenly shifts during sewing. Poor quality shuttle, excessively long shuttle spring, or oval shuttle race.

Solution: Re-adjust the shuttle bed position, reinstall the shuttle or replace the shuttle race.

4. The bottom thread suddenly breaks during sewing. The shuttle race is not qualified, with an elliptical inner diameter.

Analysis: The unqualified shuttle race with an elliptical inner diameter causes the shuttle rotation failure. The shuttle tension spring screw is too tight, resulting in insufficient pressure on the shuttle skin. The shuttle is wound too tightly or loosely and messily. The bottom thread is brittle, has knots, and prevents the shuttle tension spring from passing through.

Solution: Replace the shuttle race, slightly loosen the shuttle tension spring screw, re-wind the shuttle thread, and replace the bottom thread.

1. Ensure the machine is placed on a stable surface, and when installing the machine, make sure the screws are tightly secured. For screws on the tabletop, tighten them enough, but not so much that they protrude from the surface.
