What is a Blind Stitch Sewing Machine?

Jan 29, 2024

Blind stitch sewing machines are designed to produce nearly invisible hemming stitches on garments. This is achieved by catching just one or two threads in the fabric edge to secure it without visible stitching.

Ⅰ.Overview of Blind Stitch Function
The key aspects of blind stitch sewing machines:
① Specialized presser foot to fold fabric edge
② Zigzag needle motion to swing over the fold
③ Lowered presser foot pressure
④ Fine thread and needle to minimize perforation
⑤ Short stitches and narrow width settings
This combination allows the needle to loosely catch a few threads to tack down the hem without conspicuous stitching on the outside.

Ⅱ. Folding Mechanisms
A blind stitch machine needs to create a fold along the fabric edge first. This is done using:
① Metal hem guide on presser foot
② Grooved blade plate to facilitate turning edge
③ Adjustable presser foot pressure dial
④ Extension table for supporting fabric
The fold is secured under the foot and the needle swings over the lip to catch threads.
Ⅲ.Needle and Thread Considerations
For minimal fabric penetration, blind stitch machines need:
① Fine sharp needle (70/10 or 80/12)
② Lightweight thread like 60wt polyester
③ Low tension settings
④ Thread trimming device to clip threads
Thin needles and thread minimize perforation while low tension reduces puckering.
Ⅳ.Stitch Formation Mechanics
Forming nearly invisible stitches requires:
①Short zigzag stitch length (1.5mm or less)
② Narrow stitch width (2-3mm)
③ Minimal needle penetration of fold edge
④ Alternating left-right needle motion
⑤ Slow/regulated sewing speed

Ⅴ .Specialty Feet and Plates
Different blind stitch machines use various foot and plate styles:
① Open-toe feet for visibility
② Hemmer feet to fold fabric
③ Clear needle plates to see stitching
④ Adjustable hem guides
⑤ Grooved plate edge for easy turning

Ⅵ. Common Uses
Typical applications of blind stitch machines:
① Dress shirts, blouses, apparel hems
② Curtains, drapes, and home furnishing hems
③ Table linens like napkins and placemats
④ Hospitality items like sheets, duvets, pillowcases
⑤ Cuffs and waistbands that need invisible finishes

Ⅶ. Considerations for Buying
When selecting a blind stitch sewing machine, look for:
① All metal construction for durability
② Easy adjustment of stitch width/length
③ Visibility of needle area
④ Variable foot pressure control
⑤ Manufacturer's service and support

With the right blind stitch machine, sewers can produce professional finishes quickly, efficiently and almost invisibly. While requiring careful adjustment, the specialized mechanisms make these machines invaluable for certain sewing applications.
