The Development Prospects Of The Kazakhstan Sewing Machine Market

Apr 22, 2024

1. The textile and apparel industries exhibit substantial growth potential.

Initially, there is a substantial investment potential. Kazakhstan is situated along the ancient Silk Road and served as one of the initial proponents of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative. As a hub connecting Europe and Asia, it serves as the premier destination for foreign direct investment in Central Asia. In the past five years, investment in Kazakhstan has averaged over $20 billion annually, and investor interest in the country continues to grow.

Secondly, the industrial policies are favorable. In the year 2023, Kazakhstan implemented a series of new initiatives aimed at enhancing the business environment and conditions, refining the national "Simple Economy" entrepreneurship support program, and gradually increase support (subsidies, guarantees) for business entities.
Additionally, the light industry and textiles exhibit substantial growth potential. On the one hand, Kazakhstan is situated in a region that produces raw materials such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Conversely, it also borders major markets such as Russia, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. With abundant labor resources and robust domestic consumer demand, there is ample room for developing textile and apparel processing. Despite Kazakhstan's relatively limited light industry, the country has established a specialized economic zone for textiles in South Kazakhstan, to promote this industry.
Fourthly, the country's economic prospects are auspicious. Kazakhstan is characterized by political stability and sustained economic growth. The United Nations forecasts that Kazakhstan's economy will experience growth of 4.8% in 2024 and 4% in 2025. As incomes continue to rise, the consumer demand for textiles and apparel will continue to grow, particularly among the young population, who will become the primary consumers.

2. The demand for sewing equipment is anticipated to persistently increase.

Despite the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past decade, Kazakhstan's imports of various sewing equipment have continued to show a year-on-year upward trend, with the equipment's base continuously expanding.
From a national strategic planning perspective, the textile industry is one of seven priority areas designated by the government for development. Recently, the Kazakh Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development has declared that the development of the light industry, including textiles, apparel, leather, fur, and footwear, remains a top priority for the Kazakhstani government. The government endeavors to promote domestic deep processing, decrease raw material exports, and facilitate import substitution. International experts recommend that Kazakhstan establish itself as a new apparel production center, by manufacturing original equipment for major Western brands.
Official statistics indicate that the annual consumption of Kazakhstan's textile and apparel market exceeds $800 million to $1 billion in downstream industries. As the country's economy grows rapidly and the standard of living improves, the purchasing power of textiles, apparel, footwear, and other light industry products is increasing. Currently, a rapidly emerging fashion force is emerging in Kazakhstan, with local designs becoming a trend. An increasing number of individuals are opting to purchase apparel produced by domestic designers, which will inevitably lead to the development of a local apparel design, production, and manufacturing industry chain.

A review of the current state of Kazakhstan's sewing industry reveals that outdated equipment and outdated processes are widespread. Statistics indicate that 80% of the light industry enterprise equipment in Kazakhstan is outdated, with the majority of equipment dating back to the late 1980s. Consequently, locally produced textile products are unable to compete with imports in terms of variety, processing technology, or price. There is a pressing need for modernization and upgrades, which presents numerous opportunities for the continued introduction of advanced sewing equipment.
