Sewing Techniques for Sewing Machines

Aug 09, 2023

The greater the disparity in the nature of textiles being sewn, the more challenging the sewing task becomes. For instance, when working with delicate satin fabric for a bodice, it is advisable to avoid sewing it alongside stretchy textiles. Satin is prone to tearing, so a very fine needle should be employed. Conversely, when sewing stretchy fabrics, a needle with a thicker rounded tip is needed. When stitching together these two types of textiles, using a needle with a rounded tip suitable for stretchy fabrics can result in uneven seams on the satin; conversely, using a fine needle suitable for satin may cause excessive needle deflection, increasing the risk of skipped stitches.

However, combining other regular textiles (such as twill and silk) and stretchy textiles with a needle featuring a rounded tip does not yield adverse effects. When sewing such fabrics, the needle is guided between the threads, preventing thread breakage. It's important to note that seams created with a rounded-tip needle may not appear as neat as regular seams due to the needle pushing the thread to one side.

Besides the recommended thick and special rounded needles, slightly rounded and medium rounded needles can also be used. As stretchy fabrics come in various types, the appropriate needle tip shape must be selected based on practical considerations.

Using stretch thread with elastomeric properties aids the sewing process with rounded-tip needles, allowing the needle to glide along the fiber. Without stretch thread, the rounded-tip needle might press the thread out of the textile or increase friction between the thread and needle, leading to thread pull-out and the formation of loops. In such cases, a very pointed needle should replace the rounded-tip needle, making it easier for the needle to pass through the stretch thread. This should be considered when sewing ribbon or thin films onto woven fabric.

On the market, there are often fashionable stretch fabrics with artificial fibers that are sensitive to heat. This makes sewing these textiles particularly challenging. Hence, using high-quality needles is crucial, and sewing speed should be reduced to prevent needle overheating.

Applying powder to inflated stretch fabrics can reduce friction between the needle and thread. Dampening the fabric with water can yield a similar effect. In this situation, applying a rust inhibitor followed by soap can further decrease friction. Applying dry soap before sewing can also reduce friction and minimize damage. Spraying a plastic-infused mist around the seam area is another method to reduce wear and tear.
