What is a button sewer machine?

A button sewer machine is an industrial sewing machine capable of automatically sewing and attaching various shapes and sizes of buttons, buckles, labels, as well as pairing products like socks and gloves. It is suitable for mass production in sewing factories or other industrial departments.

Button sewer machines can be categorized into two types: single-thread chain stitch and double-thread lock stitch. Double-thread lock stitch button machines require frequent bobbin thread changes during button attachment, limiting their use. Single-thread chain stitch button machines do not require thread changes during button sewing, offering higher production efficiency and thus are more widely used. They can be further divided into needle oscillating and clamp oscillating types. In the former, the needle oscillates left and right during button sewing, while in the latter, the needle only moves vertically, and the clamp oscillates left and right. The needle oscillating type is generally preferred by sewing factories due to its durable structure, low noise level, and prevention of operator visual fatigue caused by button and fabric oscillation, as well as higher production efficiency.

Button sewing machines can attach various button styles, including two-hole or four-hole flat buttons, suitable for soft, thin fabrics like men's shirts, knitwear, and underwear (these buttons have smaller diameters); wrapped buttons, suitable for thicker fabrics like overcoats, suits, and rainwear (these buttons have larger diameters); shank or metal ring buttons, used for military uniforms, service uniforms, and identification buttons. Additionally, it can also sew on snaps and labels.

In China, button size is measured by the outer diameter, while internationally, the ligne (line) unit is commonly used, where 1 ligne equals 0.635mm. For example, an 18-ligne button commonly used on men's shirts has an outer diameter of 11.4mm. Typically, button sewing machines can accommodate buttons ranging from 9mm to 26mm in diameter.

Button sewing patterns include the "cross" and "Z" shapes , as well as specified continuous patterns. Stitch counts can be 6, 12, or 24 stitches, 8, 16, or 24 stitches, or a specified stitch count.

Button sewing machines have a high degree of automation. The operator only needs to load the button, set the button position, and press the pedal. The sewing machine then automatically performs the button sewing, stopping and trimming the thread once the specified stitch count is reached. Fully automatic button sewing machines are equipped with automatic button loading devices.
