Straight stitches are the basic stitches for sewing, whether it is an industrial machine or a home machine. The most common use of a straight stitch is to sew two pieces of fabric together, backstitching a few stitches at the beginning and end to ensure a secure seam.
01. Stitching
The most common use of straight stitches is to use seams to hold the fabric together.
The needle plate has a series of rulers in the area to the right of the presser foot, which can be used as a reference for seam allowances of different widths when the needle is sewing in the center. Line up the desired seam allowance with the ruler to sew the seam.
02. Patchwork
The seam allowance for patchwork is 1/4 inch (approximately 6mm).
Using a 1/4-inch presser foot is highly beneficial. After sewing, press the seam allowance towards the darker side of the two fabrics to prevent the seam allowance from being visible on the right side of the patchwork.
03. Topstitching
Topstitching is a straight stitch sewn on the outer side of garments or projects, often used as a decorative embellishment.
Set the machine to a straight stitch, with a stitch length of 3 - 3.5 millimeters. Sew from the fabric edge, approximately 0.6cm - 1cm inwards.
04. Edge stitching
Edge stitching can be used to enhance the durability of items like tote bags and can also serve as a simple decorative accent.
Set the machine to a straight stitch and sew approximately 3mm from the fabric edge. This technique can help reinforce the edges and also provide a decorative touch.
05. Basting
Basting stitches are used to temporarily secure fabrics together.
For instance, when you wish to check the fit of a garment before sewing the actual seams. To set the machine for basting, adjust the stitch length of the straight stitch to the longest setting. Slightly decreasing the tension on the top thread can aid in thread removal. Sew basting stitches, and check the garment's fit. Once satisfied with the fit, adjust the stitch length as needed and restore the top thread tension to its original position. Sew the seams, and remove the basting stitches.
06. Decorative Stitching
Basic straight stitches can be used to decorate fabric.
Experiment with various types of thread to create your own unique designs. Using removable marking pens to draw lines on the fabric can be helpful; ensure that you use a marking pen suitable for the type of fabric you are sewing.
07. Free Motion Embroidery
Free motion embroidery refers to creating decorative patterns using straight stitches, joining the base fabric, batting, and top fabric together.
Before starting free-motion embroidery, lower or cover the feed dogs (refer to the machine manual). Remove the presser foot and presser foot holder, install a free-motion embroidery foot, choose the straight stitch, and sew while manually moving the fabric as you sew along the design.
08. Thread Sketching
Thread sketching is a form of free-motion embroidery where multiple colors of thread are layered to create a colorful image.
To set up for thread sketching, start by lowering or covering the feed dogs (refer to the machine manual). Remove the presser foot and presser foot holder, install a free motion embroidery foot, choose the straight stitch, place stabilizer or batting beneath the fabric, and sew while manually moving the fabric by hand as you stitch along the design.
